Routes of application

Skin is the usual route. Every other route needs more care, and injection or IV is for a registered doctor only.

Injection or IV DMSO is doctor-only. Never attempt it at home. Emergencies: South Africa 10177, or 112 from a mobile.

Routes of application

Topical (skin)

  • The most common and safest route.
  • Liquids penetrate faster; gels or oil blends provide slower release and may reduce stinging or dryness.
  • Often applied to joints, muscles, scars, or inflamed areas.

How to apply on skin

On the skin

A few drops of liquid, a pea of gel, or a light roll-on pass. Small circles. Let it air-dry before clothes. Wash your hands unless the hands were the area.

Compress

Damp, not dripping, white undyed cotton or gauze for 5–20 minutes. Warm the diluent if you want a warm cloth; do not heat the DMSO itself.

Soak

A glass or steel bowl, 5–15 minutes for a hand or foot. Pat dry, then let the rest air-dry.

Spray or roll-on

Glass bottle, steel atomiser or roller. Fill two-thirds. Carrier first, then DMSO. A fine mist from 5–10 cm, or two to ten slow roll-on passes. Light pressure. Label the bottle.

Muscles in the legs and in the shoulders want different strokes — see lower vs upper body.

Fill steps for roll-ons and sprays: DIY prep.

Oral (by mouth)

  • Must always be diluted. Concentrations above 20% are not recommended.
  • Typical use: ½–1 teaspoon in a full glass of water or juice.
  • Introduce gradually and monitor for tolerance.
  • Taste and the characteristic garlic-like odour on breath are normal.

Oral use basics

Only very dilute; taste/odour expected; consult clinician.

  • ≤20% total; ½–1 tsp in large glass of water after food; short trials.
  • Avoid if GI bleeding; review meds/interactions.

Frequency: As directed / as tolerated

Notes
  • Always use on clean, dry skin. Avoid lotions, perfumes, or residues before application.
  • For topical dilution, use distilled water or a pure carrier oil (castor, jojoba, olive, coconut).
  • For face or thin skin, start at ~20–30% DMSO. For body/thicker skin, up to ~70% if tolerated.
  • Use glass containers and natural applicators. DMSO can interact with some plastics and dyes.
  • Reduce strength or frequency if you experience persistent burning, redness, or irritation.
  • A temporary garlic- or oyster-like smell on breath/skin is common and harmless.

Mucous Membranes (mouth, nose, ears)

  • Extra caution required due to sensitivity.
  • Mouthwash: 5–15% solution.
  • Ear or nose drops: 15–40% depending on tolerance.

Mouth and Eyes

Mucous membranes absorb fast and sting more. Use only pharmaceutical-grade DMSO and sterile glass tools.

DMSO Mouthwash

  1. Mix 3.5 ml DMSO + 3.5 ml 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide + 7 ml distilled water (or half water, half preservative-free aloe vera juice).
  2. Swish for 2–3 minutes twice daily, then spit thoroughly. Do not swallow.
  3. For a sore spot, dab 1–2 drops on the tooth or gum with a cotton swab, 3–4 times daily.
Notes
  • Only 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide belongs in the mouth — never industrial peroxide.
  • Stronger DMSO directly on a tooth is not for general use; ask a dentist.
  • See a dentist for any serious dental problem.

DMSO Eye Drops

Ask an eye doctor before putting anything in the eyes.

  1. Dilute pharmaceutical-grade DMSO to exactly 40% with sterile saline, in a sterile glass dropper bottle — never plastic.
  2. Place 1 drop in each eye once daily.
  3. Expect stinging for 30–40 seconds; the eyes usually feel fresh afterwards.
  4. Have an ophthalmologist check your vision every 2–4 weeks to track changes objectively.

Nebulisation

  • Only ultra-low concentrations (a few drops in saline).
  • Never mix essential oils into a nebuliser blend.
  • Must be medically supervised in chronic lung disease.

Nebulising precautions

Ultra‑low % in isotonic saline; device plastics can be affected.

  • Start 1–3 drops in 10–20 ml saline; stop if burning/tightness.
  • No essential oils with DMSO for inhalation.

  • Nebulising should be done only with ultra‑low concentrations in isotonic saline and under professional guidance. Never nebulise essential oils.

Injection and IV (doctor only)

  • Used in research and hospital settings only.
  • Concentrations range from 3–25% in isotonic solution.
  • Not recommended outside professional care.

Injection or IV DMSO may only be administered by a registered doctor. Never attempt it at home. The library mentions historical IV and injection use from research sources for educational context only — that is not a home method.

DMSO with MSM

For the difference between DMSO and MSM (DMSO2), see the FAQ. Introduce one product at a time.

DMSO + MSM Combined Internal Protocol

Using MSM and diluted DMSO together by mouth, as described in the source literature. Check with your clinician first, especially if you take prescription medicines.

  • START LOW: Begin with 500mg MSM twice daily (capsule or powder). Work up slowly over 4–7 days to ½ teaspoon twice daily.
  • FOR SPECIFIC CONDITIONS: Increase to 1 teaspoon twice daily. Can be taken with or without food.
  • COMBINED WITH DMSO: Take ½–1 teaspoon of DMSO diluted in 150ml (5 oz) of water or juice, followed immediately by your MSM dose.
  • ODOUR ALTERNATIVE: To minimise DMSO breath odour, use MSM internally and DMSO only topically.

Frequency: Twice daily

Notes
  • MSM primarily assists collagen synthesis — benefits include improved skin, hair, nails, blood vessels, and joint cartilage.
  • MSM has no known side effects and no DMSO-related odour.
  • For hair, skin, nail, and digestive improvement: expect to see results within 1–2 weeks of consistent use.
  • Crystal/flake MSM is preferred over capsules as it releases more slowly and is more effective at reaching parasites in the gut.

Lower vs upper body

Lower Body vs Upper Body – Tailored DMSO Application Routines

How to adapt DMSO application technique to the fundamentally different nature of lower body muscles (long, grounding, weight-bearing) versus upper body muscles (compact, posture-driven, precision-sensitive). Explains stroke direction, pressure, and how each responds differently.

  • LOWER BODY APPROACH — Length & Grounding: Apply DMSO using broad, steady strokes that follow the full length of the muscles — thighs, calves, and hips benefit from long, continuous motions that acknowledge their size and the work they do daily.
  • LOWER BODY — Allow the legs to rest openly after application, releasing the dense, accumulated heaviness that settles after long hours of movement or standing.
  • UPPER BODY APPROACH — Precision & Subtlety: Use shorter, more deliberate motions — the roll-on traces places where strain naturally gathers: the outer edge of the shoulder, the small groove beside the neck, or the upper ridge of the traps where posture has been pulling for hours.
  • UPPER BODY — Move with intention rather than coverage. Follow the natural contours of intricate upper-body muscles rather than broad sweeping strokes.
  • AS PRODUCT SETTLES: Lower body — muscles often feel as though sinking deeper into rest, released from carried weight. Upper body — tends to soften gradually, as if the shoulders are remembering they no longer need to stay lifted.
  • Allow everything to dry fully before clothing meets the skin.

Frequency: Adapt your technique every time you apply DMSO — the area dictates the approach

Notes
  • Always use on clean, dry skin. Avoid lotions, perfumes, or residues before application.
  • For topical dilution, use distilled water or a pure carrier oil (castor, jojoba, olive, coconut).
  • Use glass containers and natural applicators. DMSO can interact with some plastics and dyes.
  • Reduce strength or frequency if you experience persistent burning, redness, or irritation.
  • A temporary garlic- or oyster-like smell on breath/skin is common and harmless.
  • Understanding these differences turns routine into intuitive practice — meet each area with the touch it understands.

Daily Routines

Night-Time Routine

To soften persistent pain — stiff joints, old injuries, tired muscles — enough to allow rest.

  1. 45–60 minutes before bed, apply to the areas that usually disturb sleep: lower back, knees, hands or tops of the feet.
  2. Warm, sensitive or irritated areas: an aloe-based blend. Tight, cramping muscles (hamstrings, calves, shoulders): a magnesium blend — see Carriers.
  3. Let it absorb fully, then a warm or cool compress, whichever soothes more.
  4. Allow to dry fully before bedclothes or synthetic fabrics touch the skin.

Post-Exercise Recovery

  1. Once breathing has settled and skin has cooled slightly, rinse off sweat with warm water and unscented soap; dry.
  2. Apply a thin layer — roll-on for calves and forearms, spray for thighs, back or chest.
  3. Let it dry before clothing touches the skin; then a warm cloth for tight muscles or a cool cloth after hard efforts.
