About and trust
An educational site about dimethyl sulfoxide, maintained by Clifford Retief. Not a clinic, and not a shop that dispenses DMSO.
Essential DMSO is an educational knowledge site about dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The aim is to organise historical, practical, and research-oriented information in a clear, searchable format.
What this site is
- An informational library and learning resource.
- A place to explore background, history, application concepts, and published practitioner literature.
- A starting point for further reading — not a clinic, pharmacy, or treatment service.
What this site is not
- Not medical advice, diagnosis, or a prescription.
- Not a substitute for care from a licensed clinician.
- Not a guarantee of safety, effectiveness, or suitability for any person or condition.
- Not an online shop. The resources page recommends supplies and books. Any purchase happens on another site.
Medical disclaimer
DMSO can interact with medications, carry substances through the skin, and cause adverse effects. Some historical protocols involve routes or doses that are inappropriate for self-administration. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before using DMSO, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a chronic condition, taking medication, or considering use in children.
Editorial standards
- Educational framing: content should help readers understand context, caution, and practical hygiene — not encourage unsafe experimentation.
- Source honesty: claims should not be labelled “evidence-based” unless citations, study type, and limitations are available.
- Risk labelling: higher-risk protocols should clearly identify when qualified clinical supervision is required.
- One home for instructions: dilution, purity, hygiene, routes, formats, and storage live on the how-to page. Oils and the FAQ link there instead of keeping a second essay.
- Corrections: if you spot an error, outdated claim, or unsafe instruction, write to us and we will look at it.
Content review status
The public library contains 141 protocols in 17 sections, listed A to Z. How-to material is on the how-to page and in the FAQ, not in the library. Citation numbers on each entry point at the studies list. Content still needs ongoing review for contraindications, reviewer identity, and review dates. Until that process is complete, treat every entry as informational only and consult a qualified healthcare professional.
